This is a very good hardcover. Circa 1970's Kingsport Press Illustrated Junior Library for Grosset & Dunlap original publishers of Jr Library in 1948. This copy is very clean inside and out. The pages only have a hint of light natural tanning from age and are clean. The binding fine sewn binding as found in Illustrated Jr Library to ensure durability. The binding is tight and straight. Hardcover boards are illustrated in full color front with solid blue back. Boards are very good with only light shelf wear. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" X 9.5" with 299 pages and color illustrated endpapers front and back. Original Illustrated Jr Library books would be Grosset & Dunlap and not include the Kingsport Press note on copyright page so many are NOT original 1940 editions, rather circa 1970 reprints. Check copyright pages for appropriate edition information.
Originally published in 1877, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell tells the story of a horse who narrated the story. It follows Black Beauty from his idyllic childhood to a working horse in London. the story tells of both cruelty and kindness that found Black Beauty through his life. This is a wonderful reprint by Kingsport Press for Grosset and Dunlap, the original publishers of Illustrated Jr Library books in the 1940's. Kingsport continued the tradition of handsome bindings and fine illustrations in black and white drawings and color illustrations in each edition. This edition has been illustrated by Fritz Eichenberg.
