An Island Garden by Celia Thaxter is illustrated by Childe Hassam and this edition includes in Intro by Allen Lacy. In 1894, Houghton Mifflin published the first edition, 1000 copies, of An Island Garden. It was the last book Celia Thaxter wrote. A second printing was published in late 1894 just months after the authors death. The book was declared out of print in 1902. This edition from Houghton Mifflin in 1988 was the first reissue of the famous Childe Hassam illustrated edition. The illustrations are considered some of the artists best and important to American Impressionism. The prose and poetry of Thaxter is as inspirational as the color illustrations by Hassam. This collectible edition has been a lasting favorite for both contributions.
