In the 1940's The Classics Club published a series of books designed to provide the general public with classic literature and works of distinction. Walter J. Black published the books and they were designed with a fine binding appearance that owners could collect and display without breaking the bank. The bindings are very nice and feature very nice sewn (not glued) bindings with red top stain to outer edge. The Classics Club logo appears on the front and title/author lettering on spine. They were handsomely displayed by owners and collected for both appearance and substance.
Grotius The Law of War and Peace has been translated for this edition by Louise Ropes Loomis. Intro by Prof. P.E. Corbett of Yale University. Grotius was an "armchair" philosopher. The main thesis of the book is that people form society or "family" of nations. Was he giving the idea of a "United Nations" 300 years ago? Possibly. He asserted a family of nations have a code to abide by. He hoped his codes would settle disputes peacefully but in the event of war, a different code of rules should apply. The Dutch philosopher became a member of a diplomatic mission to France at only the age of 15.
