How The North Won A Military History of the Civil War by Herman Hattaway and Archer Jones is an epic narrative and analytical military history book. Going well beyond the acknowledged influence on Civil War generals of West Point training, war experiences, and lessons from European wars, the authors present new interpretations of the leadership and strategies of both sides. They have revised previous estimates of Lincoln's relations with the military putting forth that Lincoln and his generals all understood the logistical dilemmas confronting them and were in agreement of strategies. They show that Grant' much maligned campaign against Lee in Virginia was largely predetermined by political concerns and a demanding public and that it was Grant himself that who devised the " strategy of exhaustion" that ultimately caused the Confederate defeat. The book is profusely illustrated with more than 200 maps detailing strategies and tactics.
