The Maverick War Chennault and The Flying Tigers by Duane Schultz is a gripping account of the legendary pilots during World War Two. On July 23, 1941, 5 months before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed a secret executive order authorizing the bombing of Tokyo and other cities. The mission was never carried out but what evolved was America's first venture into the area of covert operations. Though Roosevelt never carried out the plan, he granted Chennault (a controversial ex-Army captain) an Air Force of 100 planes and the men to pilot them. Thus, The Flying Tigers were born. The author drew on diaries of AVG members, personal interviews, and military archives for this definitive account.
