Cities in Civilization by Sir Peter Hall ranges over 2500 years. With contributions from economists, geographers of culture and social historians, the book reveals the lives of the cities but also the lives of the people who built them and created the civilizations within. The author identifies four distinct expressions of civic innovation; artistic growth, technological progress, the marriage of technology and culture, and solutions to evolving problems. The book is finely and extensively illustrated with photos and illustrations along with the detailed and engaging text. Descriptions of Periclean Athens, Renaissance Florence, Elizabethan London, and Vienna bring to life beds of artistic and creativity. Manchester during the Revolution, Ford's Detroit and the dawn of the computer age highlight centers of technological advances.
