The Master of Ballantrae by Robert Louis Stevenson was published in 1889. This edition is finely illustrated by Lynd Ward in color lithographs and has an Intro by G.B. Stern. Originally published as The Master of Ballantrae: A Winters Tale, it is a story of the conflict between two brothers who are Scottish noblemen. The family is torn apart during the Jacobite Rising and begins in that year of turmoil, 1745. One son joins the rebels while the other remains with the Loyalists. But, there is fighting over who will support King George ll and who will depart with the uprising. Ultimately, a coin toss determines who is to stay and who is to go. After the Rising fails, one son is reported dead and the other becomes the heir to the family estate. Family business goes on as the remaining son marries the others fiancee and finds himself vilified for his choices.
