This is a very good hardcover in very good slipcase WITH the original Heritage Press Sandglass pamphlet. Heritage Press circa 1960's. The copyright date states 1941 but that would be the George Macy Publishing original date before the Heritage Press imprint began. Copyright pages were not updated, just repeated for the Macy and Heritage Press imprints, same publishing company. This copy is crisp and clean inside and out. Pages are crisp, clean and free of markings. Handsome sewn binding is tight and straight. Decorated linen cover boasts red filigree and lettering. Illustrated by William Sharp. The slipcase accompanying this edition is also in very good condition. There is only a hint of wear. Standard medium octavo book size or 6.5” x 9.5” with 552 pages
The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens was the authors 4th novel published in 1841. The tale follows Nell and her grandfather who reside in the Old Curiosity Shop. Due to her grandfathers gambling they are thrown into poverty and turmoil by an evil moneylender. The novel was so popular when published that reader in New York stormed the wharf when the final installment was delivered by ship. The novel was at that time published in a weekly serial and readers anxiously anticipated the final installment. Later, it was published in single book form.
