In December 1914, Ernest Shackleton and a crew of 27 set sail from Georgia for the South Pole aboard the ship Endurance. The goal was to cross the Antarctic overland. One month later the ship was frozen in the ice of the Weddell Sea just outside the Antarctic Circle. Ten months later the ship was being crushed by the ice floes. For 17 months the crew drifted on the ice pack, castaways in the savage land. Finally, Shackleton led 7 crew members on an 850 mile journey in a lifeboat to find help. The photographer on the journey managed to save his photos and negatives from destruction and they give a visual representation of the struggles to survive. Frostbite, animal attacks and lack of food threatened to doom the crew. This narrative is based on firsthand accounts, records and the extraordinary photos taken on the journey.
