The Diary of Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe is purportedly a true account of the life of Moll from young to old age. First published in 1722, the novel is somewhat based on the life of Moll King, whom DeFoe met while visiting Newgate Prison. In the book, Moll's mother is a prisoner in Newgate. She is released due to being with child. Moll is raised by a foster mother. The book details the rest of Moll's life as she goes through marriage, childbearing, becomes a widow and eventually leaves her children to look for fortune and security. This edition is finely illustrated by Reginald Marsh.
