In the 1940's The Classics Club published a series of books designed to provide the general public with classic literature and works of distinction. Walter J. Black published the books and they were designed with a fine binding appearance that owners could collect and display without breaking the bank. The bindings are very nice and feature very nice sewn (not glued) bindings with red top stain to outer edge. The Classics Club logo appears on the front and title/author lettering on spine. They were handsomely displayed by owners and collected for both appearance and substance.
The Praise of Folly by Erasmus of Rotterdam was originally written in 1509. It is a satirical work on humans and human life. The main theme is that foolishness can bring happiness where too much of sensibility and wisdom can bring doubt and depression. It is a satire of different people and religious institutions. This edition includes A Short Life of the Author by Hendrik Willem van Loon who also finely illustrated this edition. Nine illustrations highlight the text including the frontispiece.
