This is a very good set of two hardcover with accompanying slipcase. 1952 Bobbs Merrill Publishing. This set is very good inside and out. NOTE: previous owners bookplate neatly placed inside front cover of both volumes. The rest of the inside pages are actually still crisp and clean with no markings seen either. Both bindings are tight and straight. Red hardcover boards feature gold title/author lettering front and spine and are very good with only a hint of shelf wear. The accompanying slipcase is very good showing light shelf wear and the original paste down of title/author/publisher on spine still in place with very little wearing. Each hardcover is medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5".
The Life of Johnny Reb and The Life of Billie Yank by Bell Irvin Wiley are subtitled The Common Soldier of the Union and The Common Soldier of The Confederacy. Both titles offer a look at the soldiers of both the Union and the Confederacy and their lives as they fought for their homeland. Each has been meticulously researched and drawn upon from letters, diaries, eyewitness accounts and more. The work is established modern study of common soldiers in war. They are a social history of the soldiers, with that being the primary focus and not a study of tactics and battles.
