Pea Ridge the Civil War Campaign in the West by William L Shea and Earl J Hess was the first definitive study of a battle in the Trans-Mississippi. The area had previously been overlooked by historians. On March 6-8, 1862 one of the earliest battles of the Civil War took place on a wintry field in Northwestern Arkansas. The battle of Pea Ridge was one of the largest engagements fought on the western front and altered the balance of power in the Trans-Mississippi. With the victory, the Federals won control of this vast area ensuring the Union triumph that was sealed at Appomattox 3 yrs later. This narrative contains both the terrible fighting at Pea Ridge but also the story of the grueling overland campaigns across the Ozark Plateau and Mississippi Delta.
