The career of John Bell Hood profoundly influenced the conduct and outcome of the American Civil War. His leadership of the Texas Brigade in 1862 helped make possible the continued resistance of the South. But, his disastrous command of the Army of Tennessee 2 years later contributed to the eventual defeat of the South. Hood's personal bravery helped make him a combat leader who could inspire others. At Gaines' Mill, Manassas, and Antietam, Hood gained well deserved renown. But, those same qualities made him less fit as a commander. His failure to stop Sherman's advance led him back to Tennessee where that campaign ended in defeat. In this book the author gives a reassessment of Hood's life and Civil War career. He demonstrates that Hood's difficulty came from an unwillingness or inability to plan operations and supervise subordinates who were often left without clear directives in the midst of battle.
