Despite its important role in the Civil War, The Army of The Ohio has not been highly studied. In this book the author fills in the blanks in the engaging history from its formation in 1861 to the costly triumph at Shiloh and failure at Perrysville in 1862. It tells the story of the varying backgrounds of the soldiers and how leaders such as Anderson, Sherman and Buell failed to integrate the units into a cohesive group. The result was a decentralized army easily disrupted but nearly impossible to defeat in combat. The book also used the Army of the Ohio as an example of battlefield performance in the war.
