The Capture of ATTU has been compiled by Lt. Robert J. Mitchell with Sewell T. Tang and Capt. Nelson L. Drummond. It includes an intro by Gregory J.W. Urwin. Before World War Two, the most notable characteristic of Attu island was its westernmost position in the Aleutians. It was not particularly significant.... except to the Japanese. Located 1,000 miles from mainland Alaska, the Japanese moved onto the island with no resistance from American forces. Suddenly, the insignificant island became extremely important to America. When American troops landed to repel the Japanese, they were meet with brutal weather that delayed everything and caused inaccurate bombing runs. The battle was just over two weeks but brutal and costly. This book is a firsthand account that expresses all the hardships endured. It was originally published in 1944 and became the military's official history of the engagement.
