A Dark and Bloody Ground by Edward G. Miller is subtitled The Hürtgen Forest and the Roer River Dams 1944-1945. Before the Battle of the Bulge, there was the Hürtgen Forest. The American Army, having driven through Belgium unopposed, ran head-on into German soldiers on their home ground, some of the most rugged country in western Germany. For weeks, American units were ordered into the forest only to be chewed up by German artillery and infantry. The Battle of the Bulge interrupted the forest battles but did not end them. Finally, in Jan. 1945, Americans resumed their offensive and were able to break through after one of the bloodiest battles and disastrous campaigns of the war. This book examines the entire scope of the campaign from command to troops on the ground.
