Ambrose Burnside, the Union general, was a major player on the Civil War stage from the first clash at Bull Run until the final summer of the war. This biography focuses on the Civil War years from the Carolina coast victories that catapulted him to fame to the fiasco of the Crater which saw him denied another assignment. He resigned from the Army the day Lincoln as assassinated. The author demonstrates that Burnside was often a scapegoat of his superiors and the Burnside's Tennessee campaign of 1863 was praiseworthy and aside from occasional lapse, he deserves praise from historians and history buffs.
