For 14 years American dropped bombs on the Vietnam countryside in what stood as the longest war. They dropped over 8 million tons of bombs and lost over 8,588 fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Ironically, the least popular war produced some of the most effective groups of warriors the nation has seen. In this book, Fast Movers, official navy historian John Sherwood offers an authoritative social history of the air war, focused around 14 of the aviators. Legends like Robin Olds, Steve Ritchie, and John Nicole along with lesser known heroes. Drawing on nearly 300 interviews the author recalls stories of great pilots and great planes such as the famous F-4 Phantom, the F-05 Thunderchief, the F-8 Crusader and others. Stories such as that of Roger Sheets who looked like Don Knots but prepped his "Vulture Flight" of Marine A-6's with the line "Gentlemen, Let's go out and kill something" to stories of lesser glory that tell of fear and suffering. Sure to please any aviation and military history buff.
