It is subtitled Prairie Travel and Scalp Dances with a Look At Los Rancheros From Muleback and The Mountain Campfire. The edition is reprinted from the original 1850 edition. In 1846, at 17 yrs old, Garrard embarked with a caravan headed for Fort William in Colorado. After arriving and spending time at the fort, he joined a group of volunteers recruited by William Bent to avenge the death of his brother, Gov Bent of Taos who was killed in an uprising. Garrard's account is the only that exists of the trial of the accused at Taos.
