By the time America was alerted to the dangers of the epidemic, thousands had died and the greatest health crisis of the century was emerging. What happened? How was this allowed to spread before it was taken seriously? The author traces the story of medical mysteries, human tragedies, and politics along with the amazing courage and incredible deceit. The book is a tribute to unsung heroes and an indictment of the institutions that failed the American people.
