This is a very good hardcover with accompanying dust jacket. Stated Second Printing 1969 Farrar Straus and Giroux Publishing. This copy is very good inside and out. The pages are very clean inside and the blue hardcover boards under dust jacket are also very good, clean with only a hint of shelf wear. The binding is tight and straight. the accompanying dust jacket is good, showing wear mostly at corner/edges and includes a small tear top edge along spine. Original price of 4.95 appears inside on jacket. Portrait of Hermann Hesse in 1905 by Ernst Wurtenberger on back of jacket. Standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 237 pages.
Gertrude by Hermann Hesse was the authors third novel, originally published in 1910 and the first American publication was 1969. The novel appears as the memoir of a famous composer beginning with his childhood and early adulthood before delving into the heart of the story, his relationship with troubled artists. The ill-fated relationship of two leads the composer to write his magnum opus.
