Originally published in 1852 in two volumes, it had a profound effect on the country's views at the time and became a best selling novel in the United States. It helped highlight and fuel the abolitionist cause and Abraham Lincoln met with Stowe at the start of the American Civil war and declared "so this is the little lady who started this Great War".
