This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 1988 Book of the Month Club Knopf Publishing. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The pages are crisp and clean with no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Green cloth hardcover boards have gold design and lettering on spine and are also near fine The accompanying dust jacket is near fine with only a hint of shelf wear. Standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 510 pages.
The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monserrat was originally published in 1951. It is a historical fiction novel following the lives of Royal Navy sailors in the Second World War who are fighting the Battle of the Atlantic. It is the story of one ocean, two ships, and 150 men. From the prologue: " But the men are the stars of this story. The only heroines are the ships: and the only villain is the cruel sea itself." The novel was adapted into film in 1953.
