This is near fine (almost like new) hardcover with accompanying slipcase. 1968 Heritage Press. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The pages are still crisp and clean with no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Ivory linen cloth hardcover boards with green woodcut illustration front are also near fine. No fading to spine. The accompanying green slipcase is very good with only light shelf wear. Includes the original as published Sandglass Heritage Club notes for the edition. Super octavo book size or 8" x 10.5" with 357 pages.
This edition of The Pilot by James Fenimore Cooper is finely illustrated in woodcuts that have been meticulously colored by Robert Quackenbush. There are two double-page spreads and twelve full page illustrations. This historical novel was first published in 1823 and tells the story of a naval pilot during the American Revolution. It is one of the earliest examples of nautical fiction, one of Cooper's most known works and considered a classic of adventure fiction. It is a tale of adventure on the high seas and the first navel fiction of Cooper.
