This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover, NO slipcase as originally presented. 1961 West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. Publishing. This copy is still crisp and clean inside and out. The pages are crisp and clean with no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Gold hardcover boards with black leather quarter trim are also near fine. There is no slipcase to accompany this copy as originally published. Illustrated maps inside front and back endpapers. The black quarter trim in in cowhide leather with gold stamping design front cover. Standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 220 pages. This edition was a limited edition, Christmas 1961. Fine seen not glued binding for durability and appearance.
The Prairie Traveler by Randolph B. Marcy, Captain U.S. Army, is subtitled A Handbook for Overland Expeditions. It contains maps, illustrations, and itineraries of the principle routes between the Mississippi and the Pacific. It was a best selling handbook for pioneers and originally published in 1859. Marcy was a Captain in the U.S. Army and spent much of his career in the American West. The War Department asked him to write this guide. It was filled with useful information used for safe passage across the Old West. It includes information on packing for the trip, crossing rivers, selecting animals for the passage, tracking and hunting and more. It is an historical account of the dangers and hazards of pioneering west during the 19th century.
