This is a very good hardcover. 1895 Little Brown Publishing. This copy is clean inside and out. There is no foxing or markings seen inside EXCEPT previous owners name neatly written in script and dated 1895 inside front cover (see photo). The binding is tight and straight. Blue hardcover boards feature gold design and title front and gold lettering along spine. There is some fading of the lettering along the spine but the front cover is not faded and overall only very light shelf wear to hardcover boards. Rough cut page edges. Smaller hardcover, crown octavo book size or 5" x 8" with 295 pages. Illustrated frontispiece still has tissue guard in place.

George Sand was actually the pen name of Amandine Lucile Aurore Dupin de Francueil. Writing under a male pseudonym, she assumed she would have more success . One of "George Sand's" best known works, Fadette or La Petite Fadette is a French novel that takes place in the 19th century French countryside. It is the story of two twins growing up together but being opposites, one more strong and emotionless and one weaker but more emotional. When finances cause the family to send one twin away to work, the other must stay at home. Pretending to be fine with leaving, one twin does so and the other is emotionally hurt at his brothers willingness to leave, although that willingness is his pride not his actual willingness. The twin left at home disappears into the woods where he encounters Fadette, who lives with her grandmother and is looked down upon by the villagers due to their living conditions and appearance. Fadette sets out to help the lone twin find his brother. But, she makes him promise to return the favor. As the twins and Fadette grow up, things will change dramatically.
