*SEE CONDITION NOTES* This is a good set of 2 hardcovers. 1917 D. Appleton Co Publishing. Both hardcovers are good condition. CONDITION NOTES: VOLUME ONE between pages 246-247, there is a crack in binding but pages are still tight to binding. There is some foxing on those pages also (see photo). Inside front cover of Volume One there is a 2" area of mild binding separation, but the pages are still tight to binding. This is inside front cover between two blank pages along 2" top edge. Aside from that, it is a solid copy with no other serious foxing aside from the aforementioned. The binding is tight and straight with pages tight. Blue hardcover boards are also good very clean with light shelf wear. VOLUME TWO: between pages 224-225 there is a crack in binding, but pages are still tight to binding. Page 144-145 has light foxing but rest of book, no serious foxing seen. The binding on both are tight, quality sewn binding, not glued, which contributes greatly to the durability of the binding despite a crack in bindings. Top page edges both volumes tipped in gold. Rough cut page edges other sides. Both volume feature a frontispiece photo of Audubon with tissue guard still in place. Standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 45q pages volume one and 494 pages volume two including index.
Audubon the Naturalist by Francis Hobart Herrick is the story of the life and times of John James Audubon. Volume One begins with an introduction to Audubon and his family. It is the early days covering his birth, nationality, and school days. Volume Two begins with his explorations in Florida and the South Atlantic. It moves on to his Eastern visits and exploration of the North Atlantic. It continues through his expedition to the Upper Missouri and ends with his final work days.
