The accompanying dust jacket is showing light wear to corners/edges but overall very good. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 638 pages.
A Gentle Madness by Nicholas A. Basbanes is subtitled Bibliophiles, Bibliomaniacs, and The Eternal Passion for Books. The first half of the book is ancient history in Alexandria when a commitment was made to gather all the world's knowledge beneath one roof. It continues through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to the 20th century with a special emphasis on book lore and book culture in Great Britain and North America. The second half of the book offers a gallery of profiles of collectors and examines great stories such as the rare book thefts of Stephen Blumberg. It includes a bibliography on book collecting.
