In 1762 James Boswell, then 22 yrs old, left Edinburgh for London. The famous Journal he kept during the next nine months is an intimate account of his encounters with the high-life and the low-life in London. He tells of his struggle for independence from his family; he talks of his friendship with Samuel Johnson and describes taverns, playhouses, coffee houses and more. It is a revealing portrait of both the man and life in 18th century London. This edition includes an intro, scholarly notes, and index. The Journal was first published in 1950 to much acclaim.
