This is a leather-bound hardcover. Circa 1980's Time Life Classics of the Old West Series. Each of the original 16 volumes in this series was photographically reproduced from the First Edition, and thus preserves the historical authenticity of the original, including typo-graphical errors and printing irregularities. Bound in brown leather, the edition features embossed "Longhorn" design front cover with gold lettering. All three page edges tipped in gold gilt. Marbled endpapers inside front and back add to the fine binding. Attached gold satin ribbon bookmark. Standard medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5".
This copy is very clean inside and out. There is light wearing to the gold gilt page edges but overall very good. The brown leather cover is very good and showing only very light shelf wear. The attached ribbon bookmark is also good with only very light fraying bottom edge. The binding is tight and straight. Each of the volumes in this series originally came with an accompanying page of notes and Classic Old West bookplate for the new owner. This copy DOES NOT contain the accompanying items.

The Vigilantes of Montana by Professor Thomas J. Dimsdale is subtitled "Popular Justice in the Rocky Mountains". This is a history of frontier justice carried out by vigilantes who, tired of the murders and lawlessness, took it upon themselves to patrol the land and rid itself of the gangs and outlaws. Citizens formed the Vigilance Committee. The worst actor was the Sheriff of Bannock, Henry Plummer, who was part of the crime wave and out of control outlaws. In Jan. and Feb. of 1864 the Committee arrested and summarily executed 20 members of Plummer's gang. The author, Thomas Dimsdale was there to witness it all. The book first appeared in a series of articles in The Montana Post in 1865.
