This is a very good hardcover. 1925 MacMillan Publishing. This copy is clean inside. The pages do have light natural tanning from age but are clean with no foxing seen. The binding is tight and straight. Brown cloth hardcover boards are good with light shelf wear but overall given age good and solid. Some rubbing to title lettering on front and publishers logo front bottom of hardcover. Sixteenmo book size or 4.25" x 6.25" with 494 pages including topics for class discussion end of book. MacMillan published books of this size designed to be "pocket books" made for easy carrying around in purse or pocket and read anywhere.
The Harbor by Ernest Poole is the story of a longshoreman in the harbor of New York. The novels themes revolve around social justice and struggles of the working class. Diverse characters populate the pages from those who came to better their lives to lines of longshoremen working the docks. It is a powerful novel and vivid portrait of 20th century New York.
Ernest Poole was a journalist and novelist. He campaigned for an end to child labor and social reforms. We was at one time a war correspondent. The Harbor was originally published in 1915. In 1918 Poole was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the book, His Family.
