This is a very good hardcover. 1911 American Book Company. This copy is clean inside and out. There is light natural tanning to pages from age but they are clean. The binding is tight and straight. Brown hardcover boards are also very good with only light shelf wear. Small duodecimo book size, or 4.75" 7". NOTE: only mark seen inside is school stamp neatly place inside front cover (see photo).
American Book Company published what they called Eclectic English Classics between 1896-1911. The series was published as a "pocket book" series designed for easy carrying around in purse or pocket to be read anywhere. Each included an intro to the book with suggestions for study to expand on the title. They were popular at the time, not particularly rare today but a nice addition to any library and transportable in size to pull out and read anywhere.
Selections From Irving's Sketch Book has been selected and edited by Robert P. St. John. The original Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. commonly referred to as The Sketch Book, was a collection of 34 essays and short stories written by American author Washington Irving. It was originally published around 1819-1820. Two of his best known stories The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle were included and attributed to fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker. Both stories are included in this edition along with 11 other stories.
