The Rural Landscape is a comprehensive handbook for understanding the elements that make up the rural landscape, regions that lie beyond modern metropolitan life. Even though the last two centuries have seen an inversion in the proportion of people living on farms to those living in cities, the land still beckons as the focus of food supply or leisure travel.
The author divides the rural landscape into mineral, vegetable and animal components and shows the interdependence. For example, he comments on the use of hedgerows in farms to divide fields and how features of the land determine where hedgerows will grow. He reveals the impact on the land of human culture and much more such as the evolution of technical skills, and making a living off the land.
Chapters include; Rocks, Plants, Land Division, Farm Structures, Small Towns and more.
