This is a very good hardcover. 1902 Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle Series Chautauqua Press. This copy is very clean inside and out. The pages have very light natural tanning from age but are clean with no foxing or markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Green hardcover boards with white design trim and lettering are also very good. Only very little shelf wear to cover and design and lettering clean with barely any fading. Smaller hardcover, crown octavo book size or 5" x 8" with 260 pages including appendix.
The Chautauqua Institute is the home of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle. Founded in 1878 it is the oldest continuous book club in America. It honors at least 9 outstanding books yearly in genres from poetry to history to literature, essays and more. They have been a leader in education and have a young readers programs.
Ten Englishmen of the Nineteenth Century by James Richard Joy is a history of 19th century England. Using biographies, the author presents a historical narrative. The ten "Englishmen" are men in public life, political or military. It is not an artist, author or scholar account and like bios are not included. The bios included are Wellington, Canning, Stephenson, Russell, Cobden, Peel, Shaftesbury, Palmerston, Gladstone and Disraeli. Chapters include Wellington and the Struggle with Napoleon, Canning and European Affairs, Stephenson and the Railway, Corden and Free Trade, Lord Palmerston and Foreign Relations and more.
