This is a very good hardcover. 1903 Chautauqua Press, Chautauqua Reading Series. This copy is clean inside and out. There is light natural tanning to pages but no foxing or markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Navy blue hardcover boards are very good featuring white trim design and lettering front and spine. There is little to no wearing or fading of cover lettering and only very light shelf wear mostly corners/edges. Smaller hardcover, crown octavo book size or 5" x 8" with 264 pages.
Provincial Types in American Fiction by Chautauqua Home Reading Series by Horace Spencer Fiske is a literary analysis. It features a representation of characters by region in American fiction. New England, the South and the Midwest characters are analyzed as depicted by the authors. It is an analysis of the role of regionalism in American literature by examining characters by authors such at Mark Twain, Nathanial Hawthorne and more. The book has been deemed culturally important and includes a preface by the author.
The Chautauqua Institute is the home of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle. Founded in 1878 it is the oldest continuous book club in America. It honors at least 9 outstanding books yearly in genres from poetry to history to literature, essays and more. They have been a leader in education and have a young readers programs.
