The History of Nantucket County, Island and Town Including Genealogies of First Settlers by Alexander Starbuck is a rich detailed history of Nantucket which was the principle center of the whaling industry and ships. History suggested that the Norsemen were the first to visit the 30,000 acre island south of Cape Cod in the 10th century. More definitively, Bartholomew Gosnold, and Englishman, visited in 1602 and the islands were settled about 1659. Several Quakers were among the original owners of Nantucket and called the "First Purchasers". The history develops over the span of the book which includes several pull-out maps, still intact in the edition. Vintage photos and illustrations accompany the rich and detailed text.
