This is a very good hardcover. 1909 Thomas Crowell Publishing. This copy is clean inside and out. NOTE: The binding is tight and straight overall and good given age, BUT title page has separated from binding because of a tear that eventually ran entire length of page causing it to come loose from binding. Title page now laid-in. Otherwise binding very good given age with only hint of separation between pages 228-229. Rest of pages appeared tight to binding. There is light natural tanning to pages from age but not severe and no serious foxing seen. The top page edges are tipped in gold and there is fading and some wearing of gold gilt. Decorated green hardcover boards have gold design and lettering front and are very good with light wearing mostly corners/edges. Standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 423 pages.
The Maine Wood by Henry D. Thoreau has an intro by Clifton Johnson along with being illustrated with his photos. During trips to the largely unexplored Maine woods, Thoreau climbed the mountains, paddled the rivers, and observed all the woods had to offer, taking copious notes. He observed moose and other wildlife, flora and fauna, and landscaped to inspire. Originally published in 1864, this book collects all those observations into a detailed trip through the Maine woods. This edition also includes an appendix of trees, flowers and shrubs, list of plants, list of birds, quadrupeds, and list of Indian words.
