This edition of The Optimist's Daughter by Eudora Welty is a special signed by author limited edition from Franklin Library. It is finely illustrated by Howard Rogers. It wont the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1973. It was originally published in long form by The New Yorker in 1969 and revised to book from 1972. The novel revolves around Laurel, who travels to New Orleans to care for her father after a recent surgery. Sadly, he is not recovering and during his decline Laural visits and reads to him. His wife is not sympathetic to his failing and may be accelerating his decline. The two must spend time together when they return to bury Laurel's father in his hometown. Soon, the wife leaves for time away and Laurel is surrounded by memories of her father and reconnects with the family and friends she knew before moving away. The comforts of old friends and familiar places leave Laurel with comforting memories which her late father's wife can never replicate or understand.
