But many exploits by daring agents on both sides have received scant attention. This book is the memoir of one relatively obscure spy who had more than his share of thrilling adventures and escapes in three years of cloak-and-dagger activity. Appalled by the North, he was easily recruited into General Braxton Bragg's secret service. He became a scout and raider in 1863 and proved adept at gathering intelligence use in harassing Federal posts around Nashville. The following year he was detailed to Toronto Canada. He began a series of undercover missions that included a sensational but ill-fated plot to free thousands of Southern prisoners of was on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie.
