This is a very good hardcover, NO dust jacket, jacket missing. 1947 Edition from Lutterworth Press, London. This copy is clean inside and out. The pages only have very light natural tanning from age with no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Olive green hardcover boards are also very good with only light shelf wear. The title/author lettering along spine is good, light fading but visible. Crown octavo book size or 5.5" x 8" with 292 pages.
The Life of the Fields by Richard Jeffries contains an intro and notes by Samuel J. Looker. Numerous wood engravings by Agnes Miller Parker bring the scenes of fields and wildlife to the reader. Jeffries was an English nature writer depicting nature and rural life in books of natural history along with novels. Originally published in 1884, this reprint edition was published in 1947. Chapters include The Pageant of Summer, Bits of Oak Bark, Clematis Lane, Nature Near Brighton, Nature and the Gamekeeper and more. Essays include The Awakening, Scarcity of Books, Sunlight in London Square, The Pigeons at the British Museum and more. The author's books were praised during his lifetime and several published posthumously and they remain popular nature books today.
