Annals of the Former World by John McPhee was the 1999 nonfiction Pulitzer Prize winner. For 20 years, John McPhee traveled the United States in the company of geologists. The aim was to write a complex work describing a cross-section of North America at the 40th parallel and in doing so give an account of the deep history of the continent along with the science of geology and the styles of the geologists he traveled with. The book was immediately recognized as a masterpiece of nonfiction. The work consists of 4 volumes; Basin and Range, In Suspect Terrain, Rising From the Plains, Assembling California and Crossing the Craton. It includes extensive maps and a geologic time scale.
