This is a very good set of two hardcovers in slipcase. 1964. American Heritage Press. This set is very good inside and out. The pages are very clean inside with no markings seen. The bindings are tight and straight. Dusty blue hardcover boards on both are also very good with only very light shelf wear. The accompanying slipcase is very good with light shelf wear. Each volume is standard medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 588 pages in Volume Two and 398 pages in Volume One.
The American Heritage Cookbook is a wonderful presentation of traditional recipes and history of Americana cooking. Volume One is An Illustrated History of American Eating and Drinking. The historical foods consultant for the edition was Helen Dupree Bullock. Chapters include Native Bounty, The Yankee Kitchen, Southern Cooking, Plain and Fancy, Dining at Home, Dining Out, and an epilogue by Mark Twain. It is a beautifully illustrated history of food and cooking in early America. Volume Two contains 20 Chapters that include Preserves and Relishes, Pies, Cakes and more. Illustrated endpapers front and back feature equivalents and weights and measurements. Menu chapter includes Lincoln's Inaugural Luncheon, Dining at Shakertown, Dining at Jefferson's Monticello and more. The set is delightful, historic and full of hundreds of recipes and anecdotes.
