The author, veteran writer and merchant marine officer, scoured books and archives to collect dramatic stories from all of America's wars through World War Two and compiled them into this illustrated volume. Excerpts from Winston Churchill, Lowell Thomas and others are combined with eyewitness accounts by heroes, victims and survivors. those profiled include Capt. Thomas Boyle and the crew of his Baltimore schooner. The record of Confederate raider Raphael Semmes is described in colorful detail by members of his infamous Alabama. During World War Two section recounts attacks on merchant convoys by U-boats, dive bombers and more. Stories include men in lifeboats battling the elements and Japanese machine guns. The vintage photos and maps detail the engagements and add detail to the engaging text.
