For the great Renaissance masters, the creation of art was not only an intellectual or aesthetic pursuit, it was a contest. 16th century artists knew each other - sometimes as friends, sometimes as enemies - but always as rivals. Quoting from poems, letters, contracts and other writings, Renaissance Rivals demonstrates the extent to which artists, along with their patrons, thought about art in the context of rivalry. The book is lavishly illustrated with full color work along with black and white drawings that accompany the engaging and detailed text. Rivals such as Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and Titian are revealed in the art history of rivals.
