In the year 1771, a boy named Maraduke Van Swearingen was captured by Shawnee Indians in what is now West Virginia. He was taken to Ohio and given the name Blue Jacket, from the blue shirt he was wearing at the time. The boy grew to excel as a warrior and leader and became the only white man to be made war chief of the Shawnee. Much of the dialogue of the book is taken from historical records. Blue Jacket War Chief of the Shawnee by Allan Eckert is another great book from the famed author showing how Blue Jacket was dedicated to preserving Indian lands and it takes the reader back to the frontier of America and the wilderness of Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky at the time.
