This is a very good hardcover with glassine dust jacket. 1944 Modern Library Illustrated Edition. This copy is very good inside and out. NOTE: There is a gift inscription inside front cover and dated May 1947 (see photo). The pages inside are clean with light natural tanning from age but no foxing or markings seen aside from gift inscription. The binding is tight and straight. Illustrated hardcover boards are good, there is some wearing to hardcover boards along bottom edge and top corners. Accompanying the hardcover is the original glassine jacket which is good, showing some light wear. Crown octavo book size or 5.5" x 7" with 557 pages.
Emerson's Essays from Modern Library is an illustrated edition. The illustrations are from John Steuart Curry and includes a two page color frontispiece and various color and black and white plates throughout.
Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American poet, philosopher and essayist. He was nicknamed " the Sage of Concord" and a leader of intellectual culture. His works influenced the likes of Longfellow and Thoreau and continues to influence thinkers around the world. He was one of the most influential writers of the 19th century.
