This is a near fine (almost like new) leather-bound hardcover. 1976 Easton Press Collectors Edition. This copy is crisp and clean inside and out. Easton Press provided a bookplate with collectors editions for new owners. This copy has no accompanying bookplate, nor is one affixed inside anywhere, therefore near fine, almost like new. The pages inside are crisp and clean and graced with buttercream color silk moire fabric endpapers front and back. Bound in genuine brown leather, the cover features gold gilt design front and back and gold lettering on the hubbed (raised) spine. All three page edges are tipped in gold gilt with barely any wearing to the gilt which is often found on vintage gilt books. The binding is tight and straight and features Smyth sewn binding with concealed joints. Attached gold satin ribbon bookmark. Super octavo book size or 7" x 11" with 369 pages including glossary and authors notes.
This edition of The Talísman by Sir Walter Scott from Easton Press has in intro by Thomas Caldecot Chubb and finely illustrated by Federico Castello. The frontispiece portrait os Scott was specially commissioned for the edition. There is also a publishers preface for the edition.
Published in 1825, the novel is one of Scott's Waverley Novels and set during the Third Crusade. The Talisman is considered one of the best of the Waverley Novels and extremely popular when published. So enduring is the novel that the British Railways named a non-stop express train from London King's Crossing to Edinburgh Waverley "The Talisman".
