This edition of The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane from Easton Press is finely illustrated by John Steuart Curry. It includes a publishers preface and intro by C are Van Doren. The illustrated frontispiece was specially commissioned for the edition.
The Red Badge of Courage is historical fiction, a war novel set during the Civil War. When a young soldier for the Union Army flees the battlefield, he is soon overcome with shame and longs for a "red badge of courage" or a battle wound. Soon, his regiment again faces battle and he carries the regimental colors into battle. Crane had never fought in battle (he was born after the war) he used historical references to depict accuracy for the novel. The novel was well received and garnered much acclaim. It has been adapted for film several times.
