As with many novels of its time, The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James was originally serialized in the Atlantic Monthly and MacMillan's Magazine in 1880. It was then published in novel form in 1881.
It is an endearing story of a young woman finding her future overwhelming. After inheriting a large amount of money, she finds herself the victim of scheming American ex-pats. Set in Europe it is one of James' best works.
